For our flash animation assignment, we wanted to look at what home was, and how we defined home. Our main idea based around the concept that home is not where you are, but where you feel like you are accepted. We also chose to tell this story using a theme of nature because we felt that it helped reinforce the idea that home is not based on a specific location or building, but in those who surrounded you. The idea of telling this story using a polar bear came from the simplicity of the color scheme needed to tell the story. A polar bear would provide a simple black and white character that could be manipulated easily. Since our idea revolved around feeling accepted, we decided that initially the polar bear should be an outcast for some reason. At first the idea of giving him a black spot came to mind, as it would give a big visual representation of why the other polar bears wouldn’t accept him, while the pandas would. In the end, we decided to make him chubby. It was a more subtle way that would lead to the end result we were looking for while allowing us to make more statements on the question of what home is. We felt that having him first try and draw on his spots would show how home is a place where you are accepted for truly being yourself, and how trying to force yourself to fit in does not help. The scene with the bird was added into the piece to try and show how when looking for a place to belong and call home, we have a tendency to try and latch onto anyone or anything. It showed our desire to have someone to care for us. It also provided a nice example of how you can be liked by others without being truly accepted or really feeling that you belong with them. This is why the chubby polar bear ends up being happy when he first meets the bird, but the bird still flies away. The bird is fine with the polar bear, but has his own place to call home. Another way to put it is that even if you are accepted for who you are, there is a kind of mysterious factor that goes into being able to call a place home. Even though the bird is accepted by the polar bear, it is not considered his home. We started and ended our project with the polar bear appearing to be lazy because we thought it was a cute and somewhat humorous way to provide an example of being accepted. There were some issues in making the polar bear chubby enough to stand out, which is something we would try and further work on if given more time or if given the opportunity to reconceptualize this particular piece. Overall, we felt the various ideas and the overall meaning of our piece was maintained throughout and we are excited about the end result.

1. A polar finding his place with the world
ReplyDelete2. the animation was amazing and I loved the color scheme throughout the entire thing
3. It was very creative and very heart felt which I really enjoyed
Concept: A polar bear affected by climate change floats in the ocean and makes new friends.
ReplyDeleteStyle: It was cute, cartoony, very light.
My reaction: I really liked the song that you chose to put with the animation. I thought that the story was cute but also had a good sequence of events.
I liked the animation! The story was sad and funny at the same time haha You can tell that you guys put a lot of hard work to make this come to life! I think that everything was extremely believable and you can tell you guys have some advanced skills! Overall everything was great the music matched the tone of the animation as well.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it about?
ReplyDeleteThe animation was about leaving what home was to find a new home. Home is not always where you came from, rather home is what you make it.
Reflection:
This animation was done very well. The details, sound, and overall animation of the characters put the animation together.
Journey of Finding Home
ReplyDeleteThis story is about the polar bear finding who his family is. I really liked this animation! It was super cute and well executed. The animation techniques of the ice cracking, snow and transitions worked great. You could feel the emotion behind the animation. I loved the end scene where the panda bears drew the marks on the polar bear to fit in. :)
Great job!
1. About a polar bear looking for where he belongs
ReplyDelete2. Techniques used...
bones, animation, frame by frame
3. You guys did an awesome job! The story line paired with your animation was spot on. And even though you did have the song on the actual flash animation, the song fit really well with your story line. The images were awesome!
The story was about a polar bear that gets lost and he finds panda bears to live with in the end. The technique that was the most effective was the song that went with the animation to create a sense of emotion. I think it was very creative story.
ReplyDeletei was really impressed by how the movie had such a cinematic feel to it, with the multiple scenes and closeups etc. I thought the characters looked great. the snow overlay worked great for the closeups but i had a hard time with seeing the broader scenes behind it
ReplyDeleteI really liked your animation, the audio and scenes matched very well. The story was really cool and very detailed. It was a little hard to see in the beginning with all of the snow, but i liked the effects the snow had. My favorite scene was the panda's because i liked the color and design of that scene.
ReplyDeleteThe artistic style you used was really iconic in this animation. I loved the beautiful snow and pretty sky and sunset images. I think that this kind of surrealness really added to the idea of the little polar bear always being observing and not being part of a group.
ReplyDeleteI also really enjoyed a cute polar bear being able to experience these heavy emotions. It allows the viewer to connect and be interested in the character. I really enjoyed this animation, and the ending was a perfect amount of humor after a emotional movie.
The concept was really interesting and the music really fit. The animating was extremely well done. It made me sad.
ReplyDeleteI like the ending part and the song. The song very harmonizes with the animation. And the weather effects are skillful.
